Exit Without Blame Statement (v1)

Purpose

This document provides a standard, respectful way for individuals to step away from a volunteer or mutual aid effort without guilt, pressure, or explanation.

Leaving an effort is not failure.
Leaving is a normal and healthy option.

When to Use This Statement

This statement may be used when:

- A participant needs to disengage
- Capacity or availability changes
- Interest or alignment shifts
- Burnout is approaching
- Personal circumstances require stepping back

No justification is required.

What This Statement Does

This statement:

- Normalizes disengagement
- Reduces social pressure
- Prevents guilt-based participation
- Protects long-term relationships

This statement is not:

- An admission of fault
- A resignation from an organization
- A criticism of others
- A permanent decision

Participants may re-engage later if they choose.

Standard Exit Statement (Recommended Language)

Participants may use the following statement verbatim:

“I’m stepping back from this effort at this time. No hard feelings, and no explanation is required.”

If desired, participants may add:

- “I appreciate everyone involved.”
- “I hope the effort continues smoothly.”
- “I may check back in later.”

No additions are required.

Community Response Guidance

When someone uses an exit statement:

- Acknowledge the message
- Do not request explanations
- Do not attempt to persuade them to stay
- Do not assign blame

A simple “Thanks for letting us know” is sufficient.
