Volunteer & Mutual Aid Coordination
Mediated Pause & Reset Notice (v1)

Purpose

This document provides a standard, non-punitive way for a community, coordinator, or participant to pause a volunteer or mutual aid effort when tension, confusion, or burnout begins to appear.

Pausing is not failure.
Pausing is maintenance.

--------------------------------------------------

When to Use a Mediated Pause

A pause may be appropriate when:

- Communication becomes unclear or strained
- Participants feel pressured or overwhelmed
- Conflict begins to escalate
- One or two people are carrying most of the load
- Expectations are no longer aligned
- Emotional temperature is rising

A pause may be initiated by any participant.

--------------------------------------------------

What a Pause Is

A mediated pause is:

- Temporary
- Non-punitive
- Neutral
- Intended to reduce harm and burnout

It is a chance to step back, not to assign blame.

--------------------------------------------------

What a Pause Is Not

A mediated pause is not:

- A punishment
- A disciplinary action
- A judgment of intent
- A declaration of failure

No participant is required to justify initiating a pause.

--------------------------------------------------

Standard Pause Notice (Recommended Language)

Communities may use the following statement verbatim:

“We are pausing coordination on this effort to prevent burnout or conflict. This pause is not disciplinary and does not assign blame. We will reassess next steps after a brief reset period.”

--------------------------------------------------

During the Pause

While paused:

- No new tasks should be assigned
- Existing tasks may be completed voluntarily
- Participants may step back freely
- Discussion should focus on clarity, not fault

If a mediator is used, their role is to help clarify concerns, not to decide outcomes.

--------------------------------------------------

Reset Options

After a pause, communities may choose to:

- Resume coordination with clarified expectations
- Reduce scope or workload
- Rotate or remove coordination roles
- Close the effort entirely

Closing an effort is an acceptable outcome.

--------------------------------------------------

If No Resolution Is Reached

If clarity cannot be restored:

- The effort should remain paused or be closed
- Participants may disengage without explanation
- No individual should be blamed for the outcome

Sustainability is more important than completion.

Why This Document Exists

Many community efforts fail because they push through warning signs instead of responding to them.

This notice exists to normalize pausing before harm occurs.
