Mediator Role Reference (v1)

Purpose

This document defines the Mediator role used in volunteer and mutual aid coordination.

The Mediator role exists to help resolve misunderstandings and reduce conflict without assigning blame, authority, or enforcement.

What a Mediator Is

A Mediator is a temporary, neutral participant who helps:

- Clarify misunderstandings
- Slow down heated situations
- Facilitate respectful communication
- Support de-escalation

The Mediator does not decide outcomes.

What a Mediator Is Not

A Mediator is not:

- A judge
- An enforcer
- A disciplinarian
- A decision-maker
- A permanent authority

The role carries no power to compel behavior.

When a Mediator May Be Used

A Mediator may be invited when:

- Communication breaks down
- Tension escalates
- Participants feel unheard
- Coordination stalls due to conflict

Any participant may suggest mediation.

Core Responsibilities

A Mediator may:

- Facilitate calm discussion
- Restate concerns neutrally
- Encourage listening
- Suggest pauses or resets
- Help participants clarify boundaries

The Mediator does not assign fault.

Limits of the Role

A Mediator may not:

- Force agreement
- Impose solutions
- Remove participants
- Require continued involvement
- Override personal decisions

Participation in mediation is voluntary.

Duration of the Role

The Mediator role:

- Is time-limited
- Ends when mediation concludes
- Does not persist beyond the specific issue

There is no standing mediator position.

Stepping Into the Role

A Mediator may be:

- Any trusted participant
- A neutral third party
- Someone agreed upon by those involved

Formal credentials are not required.

Stepping Out of the Role

A Mediator may step away at any time.

Recommended language:

“I’m stepping back from the mediator role. Further coordination may pause or proceed without mediation.”

Outcomes of Mediation

Possible outcomes include:

- Clarified understanding
- Agreement to pause
- Agreement to disengage
- Decision to close the effort

No resolution is also an acceptable outcome.
